Object-in-Scene Memory Task

🧠Cognitive Function | Episodic memory

🕒Duration | 15 minutes

🖥️ Devices you can use to take this task | Desktop, Tablet, Mobile

🎯Output | An array of memory measures for identification and localisation performances, including identification accuracy & speed, types of mistakes etc.

The participant is presented with a photo of a daily scene (e.g., kitchen, office, park etc) and instructed to remember the particular object (e.g. muffins, toys etc) in the scene. To ensure that the participant has learned these details, the participant has to answer a question about the scene and click the object in the scene in order to proceed.

About 2-minutes later, the participant is presented with the scene again and asked to identify the right object from a pool of 20 objects and position the object in the right location in the scene.

More details about this task

Amongst the 20 objects that the participant could choose from, there is the target and a distractor that is semantically identical to the target object. For example, the target is a guitar, then there will be another guitar available too.

This task is engaging. It’s specifically designed to make sure that the participant has learned the pair of object and scene and learned the location of the object.

This task yields many interesting measures of episodic memory: How accurate do you remember the association between the object and the scene? Maybe you remember it was a muffin, but not sure which muffin? How precisely can you remember the location of the object in that scene? …

But most importantly, it’s fun (approved by the previous elderly participants). We hope that this task is interesting enough for the participants who are motivated to participate in this study again.
